1955 Chevy Nomad Station Wagon

The 1955 Chevy Bel Air Nomad Station Wagon started life as a very "futuristic" concept car based on the sporty styling of the 1953 Corvette. GM Styling VP Harley Earl tasked his design Chief Carl Renner to design a "Sport Wagon" that was practical for busy families but had the rakish upscale good looks of the popular Corvette sports car. Renner and his team came up with a radical one-off wagon that was longer than the Corvette but retained the Corvette's distinctive front and rear profiles. This knock-out wagon was introduced to excited crowds at the 1954 GM Motorama Show that was held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York city, and was immediately dubbed the "Waldorf Nomad". Due to the public's enthusiastic comments about the "Waldorf Nomad", Harley Earl immediately approved the wagon for production. The design team re-worked the Nomad's front and rear profiles to match the Ferrari-inspired front grill and tasteful taillights planned for the other passenger cars in the 1955 Chevrolet line-up. The chassis was a standard 1955 station wagon unit, and the Nomad also used the same windshield, cowl, front fenders, hood, doors and dashboard as the other 1955 passenger cars. But the rest of the sylish sheet metal was unique to the Nomad, including the classy ribbed roof, the unique cast side trim and headlight "eyebrows" and the rear wheel well openings ehich were copied from the Corvette. Technically, the Nomad S/W is part of the Bel Air line-up and the body style was designated by GM as Series# 2429. The Nomad could be ordered with the "Blue Flame" 235 c.i. 6-cylinder engine, or the all new 265 c.i. V8 which was Chevy's first V8 in 36 years! For an extra $60 the 265 V8 came with the "Power Plus" option whose 4 barrel carb uped the horsepower from 162 to a smokin' hot 180 bhp! Popular from the day it first arrived in Chevy dealerships, the Nomad Wagon remains one of the coolest and most sought-after Classics Cars of all time.
